David won our fell Race in three consecutive years. 1955,56 and 57.

I was a Clerk of the Course in those days and I remember vividly his first win in a time of 14.22 mins which then was the second fastest time ever. Only the famous Dalzell had a better time way back in 1910.

Just two days after completing his National Servive, David, an old boy of Keighley Grammer School, set off in a large field of runners to compete in Burnsall's Senior Fell Race. On the ascent he was third to the Cairn in a time of 9½ minutes. Like many of the winners of the Burnsall Fell Race, it was the descent that gained him his victory in the second best time ever. An additional prize had been awarded for anyone completeing the race in under 15 minutes and that duly went to the winner

Welcome back David for you are ever in the history of the oldest short distance fell race in the British Isles.

Incedently, the runner who beat David to the summit was David Hodgson and he is giving the Fell Race commentary today

Leonard Horton - President Burnsall Sports Committee
